Lemmy maintainer
That is true, but not so easy to do. To make donation pages like those in your link would require setting up some kind of nonprofit and directly handling credit card payments with some payment processor, and probably various legal requirements. By relying on existing donation platforms we have much less hassle.
It seems difficult to explain these in such a short text. However I will make a similar post soon to improve the donation page on join-lemmy.org, maybe it could be included there as it has more space available.
I was testing a new feature for Lemmy 1.0, native binary releases in addition to Docker. Sorry if it spammed your notifications, should have marked them as draft or prerelease.
You mean to add donation links for the instance? That makes sense, but I fear that it would be too complicated for users. Admins already have many ways to put donation links eg in the sidebar and sticky posts, but for developers theres only a small button at the top which is easy to miss. And our donations have gone down a lot, now only 2400 Euro per month.
That would mean hiring someone, which requires initial funding like a bank loan. It is also necessary to get the funding and skill to setup a website, automate the hosting and most importantly run a marketing campaign. Otherwise no one will know about the service nor use it. So it requires setting up a whole business, do you know how to do that?
We devs have never met in person, and we are too shy to publicly share our pictures :D
