Just 10 years ago the US was still seen as being progressive and racism was slowly becoming a thing of the past… and not even in 10 years all the major civil rights achievements of rhe past 70 years are being thrown out so fast it is making my head spin.

Duh. The right has always been the party of batshit crazy Talibangelicals, xtian Shariah Law, racism, and anti-intellectualism, but having Obama win?

That’s the point when they REALLY fucking lost it. Who did they go ALL IN for right after Obama? When did they go nuts for the teabagger shit and the pizzagate/ qanon dumbassery?

Having a Black man in the White House drove them all to be even more insane.

I cannot in good faith accept this sentiment as anything close to accurate. The terms of Obama were filled with so much overt and abject racism that anyone who believed America was ‘getting over it’ should have noticed.

The current inferno is a spectacle but the buildup laying kindling and gasoline wasn’t subtle.

As expected… for the first time, white people don’t make up the majority of the under 18 demographic, and Trump/alt right is trying to reverse that. They’ve already lost the war and are throwing their last temper tantrum. Living in these next years will continue to be difficult, but I believe that in the long run the majority will win. This is cyclical. Maybe AOC will be our first female president.

Yup. This is what Trump voters wanted. They want it so much they were willing to give up everything else. Even more unfortunate for them that they are just pawns for Trump. Most won’t ever realize it.

Reality is already setting in for some. I see and talk to them in my rural farm area.

Is it really though? Not trying to start a fight; I’m genuinely curious. If they would gleefully vote for him again does it even matter?

Some will, some won’t. We can’t know if and until that time arrives.

Is there any actual understanding of how catastrophic this is, and will continue to be? Like, any internalization or admission of what’s happening?

And that’s a serious question - read an article the other day about how a bunch of Iowan farmers were still super gung-ho for orangeboi, because of how deep they were in the propaganda

Most people here don’t have any post-secondary education, but on a deep instinctive level are processing it as best they can. I’m of the opinion it’s still deeply subconscious, as far as implications, but is working it’s way to being consciously grasped beyond immediate implications. This is farm country, and there are plenty who don’t have that level of inference yet. The old timers remember immediate Post-Depression efforts and the second Great War, so they’re cottoning on. Admission? And panic the children? These things are discussed in the fields, not in public.
