Tariffs seem to be Trump’s go-to move nowadays. “Grab them by the wallet”.
- To Putin: stop the war or tariffs!
- To Europe: buy more US oil or tariffs!
- To Denmark: gimme Greenland or tariffs!
- To Melania (probably): pretend you can still bear being in the same room with me or tariffs!
- McDonald’s - “cash or card, sir?” “Tariffs!”
His voters still don’t seem to have figured out that just means things will cost them more.
it’s annoying that politicians don’t call it what it is: import tax.
Not “Grab them” but “Grab the US consumer”. Tariffs raise prices inside the USA. The target country only loses by being less competitive in the US market.
Trump wants to raise import taxes on goods from everyone, so only US goods are competitive. Trouble is the US has exported a bunch of manufacturing so it must import.
Oh, not his beloved McDonald’s.
