There is no way my son will be serving in a Trump army, fighting in a Trump war. You know that it will be incompetently managed, with more of an emphasis on making sure lots of government war contracts go to those who have properly kissed his ass and paid bribes/kickbacks, rather than the safe and effective deployment of our troops.
So many things these days scream, “I want action, screw results!” It’s almost like as society we don’t understand mid/long term thinking anymore and are just constantly chasing instant gratification while digging deeper and deeper into the hole we’re trying to get out of.

They have, in similar cases, acted as a transition between untenable authoritarianism, and democracy. I would trust our top officers over anyone in Trump’s cabinet (or even the Republican Congress at this point).
I’m well aware of the dangers of a military coup. I just don’t know how else this could ever be stopped.

Even if his orders are lawful, they’ve sworn an oath to defend the constitution from all threats foreign and domestic: they’re duty bound to engage him in the exact same way they do with a combatant from Isis or something. Donald Trump is an enemy to the US.

I have a 25 year old son, and there is no way I’ll allow him to be dragged off by the government to die in a Trump War whose main objective is to destroy America for Putin, so Trump, Musk and their friends can loot America. There is no way my son will be joining a Trump military for any reason.
A draft is political suicide, nothing would get him off the white house faster. There’s a reason the wars against China and Russia have people from other countries slated to die.

I’ll answer with an honest answer back to you. How would they help if they are drafted and sent to the front lines of some war? If they don’t follow orders they are court marshaled and sent to prison. Should I as a parent allow that to happen to my children? I’m sorry for the poor and unfortunate, and if there was anything else I could do for others I would, but my priorities will always be my family first, and the rest of society second.
Look up what they used to do to German soldiers who refused to follow orders during WW2 because they didn’t agree with their orders, same was done to conscripted (other type of draft) Russian soldiers.

Putin knows that one of the quickest ways to destroy the US is if the rest of western civilization abandons it. The infrastructure isn’t in place yet for them to just do whatever they want and arrest every protester like Russia does, so they do have to still take that into account, Panama is remote and unknown to a large portion of the population sadly. But the building of Panama Canal is something that many learned about in school as a pivotal historical infrastructure project. Something still in use today and referenced in the news even though they may not know where it is. For the America is Best narcissist, taking back what “we” built is an admirable goal.

I entirely agree we shouldn’t do it, but I don’t believe it would necessarily be an illegal order to follow.
Invading a sovereign country for overtly offensive reasons isn’t against any particular military law, it’s just shitty.
The president doesn’t have the power to declare war, only to do everything involved in a war, but I don’t think that would actually make any of the orders illegal, unless they were to explicitly do some war crimes or some such.
I get what you’re saying, though maybe when America becomes the new nazis, we can have a Nuremberg Trial 2.0 and set some new precedents!
I have my doubts that any nation is going to accept the precedent that other nations can have authority over their use of military force.
That also sets a difficult precedent, both for soldiers and the court. If following an order to participate in an invasion of another country, while only engaging with valid military targets according to the rules of war, is a war crime if the international community later decides it wasn’t justified then soldiers will become war criminals not because of their actions being brutal or unethical, but because they were insufficiently aware of the global opinion of a war.
Second, it potentially puts the court in a position where they suddenly need to imprison literally hundreds of thousands of soldiers, to say nothing of arresting and trying them. This could easily make the court appear toothless when they fail to have the power to arrest the US army, nor to actually have a place to put them.
Give Fox News 6 months of their two minutes hate bullshit and Trumpers will be frothing at the mouth for Canadian blood. Americans have already proven that we’ll follow a blatant liar into war if the propaganda sets the tone for it.

When I was in Italy after 9/11, an entire restaurant stopped service because we were American and the restaurant expressed that they were with us and they felt deep grief for our country. How do people who lived through these times forget these aggravating and tender moments? They don’t seem to remember and connect the dots.

To be fair, the car flags and stickers appeared after 9/11. Iraq was a convenient rotate into revenge for Daddy.
Not justifying the flag stuff, but at the time briefly it felt like the country had been as a whole attacked and we were one. Then the shit started, the blaming Americans here who looked like the ones who did it, the Patriot Act quickly being agreed to while some of noticed there wasn’t even time to read it, etc. But just saying, 9/12 and the days after, the whole flag thing seemed rational.
We saw the same fervour in the UK with the Brexit vote. Family members and people I personally know, who were vociferously in favour at the time, claim now to have always believed it a bad idea.
There’s the idiom that goes something like “those who stand for nothing will believe in anything.” It always amazes me when people fall for obvious nonsense. Especially otherwise intelligent and thoughtful people.
Maybe, but relationships between the American and Canadian military are way too entrenched, even if it was a direct order, it’s pretty hard to suddenly point your weapons at someone who’s been a dedicated ally. Though I won’t blame Canadians for being more than a little pissed for quite some time, I just don’t see how this would actually happen.
My theory:
Panama controls a major trade route and charges shitloads of money for each ship that passes.
Same reason for Canada. The North-West Passage is melting and will be open year round in the not too distant future.
The same makes sense for Greenland if you consider Russia as a trade partner with lots of raw metals. Plus Greenland itself may have oil. Again, this when the ice melts completely.
