Summary

Elon Musk is distancing himself from sweeping federal job cuts linked to DOGE, blaming agency heads—not DOGE—responsible for mass layoffs, including the announced 70,000 job cut at Veterans Affairs.

Despite claiming DOGE’s role as merely advisory, Musk admitted to mistakes in private meetings with GOP lawmakers and pledged to correct them.

Some cuts have already been reversed, with a Trump administration memo clarifying agencies are not required to fire probationary employees (new hires).

He should be fired from DOGE for giving bad advice and drawing a high salary. Bloody incompetent, such a simple job and he can’t even do it.

Someone should tell Trump that he can just confiscate all of Musk’s assets at any time and instantly become the richest man in the world.

(The truth of this statement is not relevant to whether Trump should be told this.)

he has immunity from criminal prosecution, and it could be claimed that Elon (an illegal immigrant) has assets that can be used to help pay off the national debt.

The Cheeto could straight up shoot him dead in the oval office, then alter Elon’s last will and testament live on TV and nobody could do jack shit about it.

This asshole is treating these jobs like he treated Twitter. Fire everyone, see what breaks, then hire those people back. Real efficient there! Let’s not actually review processes and jobs to see if there are overlaps anywhere. Just get rid of everyone and see what grinds to a halt or is really unpopular with people.

I’m pretty sure he did not “hire those [Twitter] people back”. I would be surprised if the moderation team were even close to the same size as before.

That wasn’t one of the things that broke, from his perspective. Twisting the narrative via activist mods was always the goal. He did hire a bunch of the engineers back when the site actually stopped working, because then it couldn’t distribute his bullshit propaganda.

Man, fuck this guy. 100000% all him. You don’t get to distance yourself from this when you’re the one holding the bloody knife. Fuck everything this guy does. Every single day this guy needs to be reminded of how much of a fuck up he is.

Good, maybe he’ll stop. Sheer incompetence was our only saving grace with the first Trump admin. Let’s hope this time is more of the same in that regard, as well.

No no, he wanted credit but now it makes him look bad so he’s pretending he never wanted it. But we all know the truth.

You’re probably right about the boards and shareholders though. Assuming they even think about us at all.

Exactly. There is a way to do what they’re doing that isn’t so blatant and ham-fisted, but none of these fucking idiots have any tact or subtlety. Elon thought people would be cheering him on, instead we all want to see him, Trump, and all the other oligarchs hang all because he blew his load too early in the plan to destroy the government.

It just occurred to me that Trump might be Ellen Pao-ing Musk. He knows the tariffs and mass layoffs and deportations are going to crash the economy. He needs a fall guy when it happens.

Do all your unpopular, disastrous policies with an unpopular person standing in front of you, then blame everything on that person and send them packing.

      Ellen Pao-ing

Damn, it really says something about the demographic of Lemmy that nobody in your replies asked what this means.

(I also was on reddit ~10(?) years ago during this one particular controversy)

i don’t think trump knows this is the plan, but it is the plan. it’s very convenient having a billionaire whose visa can be revoked

Supposedly he was naturalized in 2002. He’s not here on a visa.

I mean, Trump now apparently can do whatever now, so I guess he could just deport him. But not legally or by revoking a visa.

Who doesn’t associate elon with donald though? They are like the more closely tied political duo in the world where every action is seen as one.

For Ellen Pao to work one of them would have had to remain relatively unknown and forgettable.

If anyone is going to benefit from the Ellen Pao it’s people like peter thiel who are in the background while the loud duo is drawing all the attention and credit to themselves.

Yeah he blew his opportunity to take advantage of the other two playing the role of Ellen Pao by removing all doubt that he is the same by ramping the vocal participation and drawing increased publicity.
